in shades of gray

Black and white photography has always held a special place in my heart, yet, regrettably, I had never taken the time to hone my skills in this area. I suppose I was somewhat intimidated by its complexity. Creating a black and white image is far more than simply desaturating it; it requires careful consideration of composition, lighting, and contrast to effectively convey a dramatic story or to highlight a specific subject.

By extracting all colors from an image, black and white photography removes a significant distraction that can detract from the intended message. In fact, it has the ability to guide the viewer's eye towards a specific point of interest, when executed with skill and precision.

In recent months, I have been practicing this technique in order to improve my color photography. By first desaturating an image to focus solely on its structures and lighting, I am then able to re-introduce colors in a deliberate and balanced way.

The photographs showcased in this gallery were taken between 2016 and today, mostly in Asia, which has been my favorite playground for cultivating my passion for photography and my appreciation for diverse cultures. I hope you will enjoy viewing these images and embark on a journey through the lens of my camera.
